Kenyan Government is Broke Because of Corruption

When CS Rotich said that the government is broke and was unable to repay KShs 77B which was due this year October it may not have come as a surprise, and according to him, there are plans of taking another Euro bond to repay the syndicate loan.

When he says, that they are broke and planning to take another Euro bond, what rings in our minds is the mega scandals that came to light in 2016 that made this country sink low. There was massive looting and little was done by this regime to save the taxpayers money from corrupt officials. These scandals are the reason the government has gone broke.

The Euro bond Scandal
According to the Auditor General, KShs 215 billion Euro bond was not accounted for, this was two years after it was claimed by the government that the money was allocated to various ministries. Even though the government claimed to have the cash allocated, there was no receipt of expenditure to prove that true to their word, that the money was indeed allocated and spend anywhere within the government.

The NYS Scam
There were double payments of goods and from investigations by the police it emerged that entries from the integrated financial management information system (IFMIS) which is supported by the government, were manipulated. Zeroes were introduced on all transactions where by 791 million was reported to have been stolen.

Afya House Scandal
It was reported that officials at the ministry had stolen Sh5 billion, funds were diverted, double payments of goods and just like the NYS, the integrated financial management system (IFMIS) was manipulated.

Other scandals that happened under this regime are:

1.    10 billion is suspected to have been lost when there was the GDC tendering.
2.    The irregular Lamu Coal project, the company in question did not submit any proposal but it was awarded the tender, here KSh 475 billion was suspected lost.
3.    The JKIA 55.6 billion shillings, was said to have gone into the drains, during the new terminal tendering which was irregularly done through the KAA.
4.    Can you still remember the KShs 100 million hustler’s jet?
Among many more not mentioned.

So when the CS says that they are broke, and they want to borrow from Peter to pay John, he needs to be reminded that it’s because they misappropriated funds through the run-away corruptions and we expected this to happen someday.
Mr. Rotich should know that the government is broke because of them and not because they built the SGR ,or even the not seen five stadia. The only development agenda that was successful until today is corruption.
